Like spermatogenesis, oogenesis takes place in two meiotic steps (M1 and M2). From these, though, arises only one oocyte that can be fertilized. In addition, three haploid polar bodies are formed.
Moreover, it must be mentioned that the meiosis is only completed when fertilization occurs; otherwise the oocyte remains arrested in metaphase of meiosis 2. |
